Internet Vocabulary

Ninety percent of today’s web users live in non-English speaking countries, yet 56% of online content is in English. Like English is considered the language of international business, English is also the unofficial language of the internet.

The internet is changing the English language, for example 'to Google' is a transitive verb meaning to use a search engine to find information. Seeing as you are using our website to learn English, you probably know quite a lot of internet related vocabulary!

Here is a quiz to see how many words you do know. For each sentence, choose the correct word. If there are any that you don't know, make sure you find out the meaning and write them down.

How many of these words do you use in your own-language? Has your language 'loaned' these words from English?

Good luck!

American Gothic

American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood, in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wood's inspiration came from a cottage designed in the Gothic Revival style with a distinctive upper window and a decision to paint the house along with "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house." The painting shows a farmer standing beside his spinster daughter. The figures were modeled by the artist's dentist and sister. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron mimicking 19th century Americana and the couple are in the traditional roles of men and women, the man's pitchfork symbolizing hard labor, and the flowers over the woman's right shoulder suggesting domesticity.

It is one of the most familiar images in 20th century American art, and one of the most parodied artworks within American popular culture.

The Scream

Here you can see the most recognizable and known picture of Edvard Munch - "The Scream".

This expressionist picture was painted in 1893 with oil, and shows us an agonised human figure against a backgroung of the red sky. There are other three versions of Screem exist. The Munch Museum holds one of two painted versions painted in 1910 and one pastel. Another painted version is that you are now looking at - in our National Gallery of Norway. And there is another one pastel version owned by Norwegian businessman Petter Olsen.
The original German title given to the work by Munch was Der Schrei der Natur (The Scream of Nature). The Norwegian word skrik is usually translated as scream, but is cognaite with the English shriek. Occasionally, the painting has been called The Cry.
Munch himself described his inspiration for the image thus:
I was walking along a path with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.
One theory advanced to account for the reddish sky in the background is that the powerful volcanic eruption of Krakatoa tinted the sky red in parts of the Western hemisphere for a few months in 1883 and 1884, about a decade before Munch painted The Scream. This explanation has been disputed by scholars who note that Munch was an expressive painter and was not primarily interested literal renderings of what he had seen. Alternatively, it has been suggested that the proximity of both a slaughterhouse and a madhouse to the site depicted in the painting may have offered some inspiration.

In 1978, the Munch scholar Robert Rosenblum suggested that the strange, sexless creature in the foreground of the painting was probably inspired by a Peruvian mummy, which Munch could have seen at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris.

My first visit to Ukraine

What's up, guys?

I'm writing to you from the Ukraine - the Heart of the Europe.
City View

Yesterday, I have flown from Munich to the biggest airport in Western Ukraine, situated in Lviv. This city can be surely called the touristic capital of Ukraine. Rich artistic style and architecture, special character of inhabitants, and fascinating smell of the coffee from the coffeehouses create an unique spirit of antiquity.
"Dnister" Hotel

I stayed in the Dnister hotel. The staff is very pleasent. I have good experience about this night. In the morning, I decided not to participate  excursions, 'cause I wanted to see the real life of the town, and  not to be herded in crowds of tourists. I had a few walks across the paved streets, saw many interesting places and people, tasted native cuisine. I had a dinner in the canteen "Puzata Hata (Fat House)" I tried vareniki, borsch, and local coffee.
Castle Mountain

Now i'm sitting on the viewpoint on the highest place of Lviv - Castle Mountain. After some rest, I'll continue my wandering. Stay tuned for new posts!

Pack's of the best David Belle's videos review

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x98jCBnWO8w

There is a few computer games, gameplay of which is based on overcoming obstacles. One of them is "Mirror's Edge". It's about a woman called Faith who is the "runner" - the person who brings the information to important people. The tricks characters can do in these game look amazing. They said, all the tricks can be done by real people, but I didn't believe real person can leap from one building to another (which is much lower), roll, stand up and simply keep movind. As appeared, person who trains a lot, can do any more.

Remember the article about parkour? Two founders were Sebastien Foucan and David Belle. As you guessed, he is the main character of this video. From the very first seconds you can see what Ez meant saying how to land correctly. "You land on the ball of your foot, bend your knees and slap the floor with your hand".

33rd second shows us how to roll. It wouldn't help you to roll correctly if you just watch the video, but... anyway... let's go on.

52nd second, jumping from one building to another. Other jumps between buildings can be watched at 1:18 and 1:24. It is the most impressive for me.

2:56. A backseat. It's not the worse can happen to a tracer.

Well, the word-limit is over. There is no conclusion, anyway, i wish i could do such things, but it's too hard and too painful to study. But if you really want something, you can do it. The proof is on this video. Thank you for attention.

The House of My Dream

People can be divided into two categories: those who are "domestic" people loving their home and those who hate the taste of quiet. Those who love usually import parts of their souls into their houses, because their houses aren't just buildings for them. Home lovers sometimes change their position to the opposite, as well as haters do. Personally I haven't decided yet. But I have some thoughts and feeling around this problem, (any also I have to do the task to write an essay), so... let's start.

Last year I had a rest in Carpathians, we stopped in one musician's house for an excursion. He had a lot of different modern and antique music instruments, but this is another story. I was excited by the landscapes of that places. A lot of green trees growing on different layers of surface were like huge waves on a green sea. And what was the air! Ah, that moment I wanted to live there. Now I realize, of course, how uncomfortable it is to live in highland, but who knows? Maybe, when I'm old :-) .

I will forget about the money for a while and will try to describe all things I want.
A big studio with a couple of computers and with a grand piano (or two), kitchen with all modern stuffs, library, bedroom, living room, garden near the house with nice stone ways for walks. Yeah, it will be cool!
